Cleaning & Exams
It’s important to have a dental exam and teeth cleaning twice a year to maintain good oral hygiene. At Legacy Dentistry of Virginia, both the exam and cleaning are done in the same appointment.
The exam and teeth cleaning process takes no more than an hour to complete. Our dental hygienists do professional teeth cleanings and our dentists perform the exams.
These visits provide the opportunity for us to spot dental issues early on. Routine dental care means a reduced risk of gum disease and permanent damage to your teeth.
What to Expect During a Dental Exam
During your exam, our team carefully screens for signs and symptoms of oral disease. Early detection is important in treating gum disease as well as preventing periodontitis.
At a regular check-up exam, our dentists will do the following:
- Take your medical history.
- Take x-rays to look for signs of tooth decay, cysts, bone loss, and tumors.
- Examine your teeth and gums for periodontal disease.
- Screen for oral cancer by evaluating your face, lips, neck, tongue, and throat.
- Examine any restorations, such as crowns and fillings.
Once the exam is over, our dentists will be happy to discuss any problems they came across as well as answer any of your questions.
What to Expect During a Cleaning
Our regular teeth cleanings involve removing plaque and tartar from your teeth through the use of special dental instruments. While brushing and flossing is a great way to remove the bacteria in your mouth, there are always areas that you can’t reach. Having a cleaning done every 6 months will help prevent cavities and keep your smile bright and clean.
Our dental hygienists will remove all hardened plaque above and below the gum line, to prevent bacteria from growing and causing gum disease. They also remove stains that even proper brushing cannot take out. Your dental hygienist may also apply fluoride treatment if necessary.
Legacy Dentistry of Virginia offers dental cleanings for the whole family, starting with kids as young as 3 years old. We make sure our patients are comfortable the whole time.
Why Are Dental Exams and Cleanings Necessary?
Routine dental care is needed to maintain good oral health and spot problems early on to prevent oral disease. We need to remove plaque before it hardens and causes gum inflammation and disease. Treatment is always more effective when dental issues are caught early on.
Routine cleanings have other benefits as well, such as stopping bad breath. When we clean your teeth, we are significantly reducing the level of bacteria in your mouth, which relieves you of any bad odor. Cleanings also give your teeth a nicer appearance, since we remove the plaque and tartar that can make your teeth appear yellow.
